Politeness in English Language

Polite gentleman

Nowadays politeness is unfortunately starting to go out of fashion, that's why I thought today's lesson would be about that. But how can you be polite? It's very simple. Just change the words

Here are some polite expressions

Could you ....?
Instead of "can" use this if you want to sound more polite. "Can" also be used if you talk to your close friends.

e.g. John, buy me a bar of chocolate.

  • Could you buy me a bar of chocolate?

I was wondering if ....
Use this expression to ask someone politely if they would like to do something

I was wondering if + subject + past verb

  • I was wondering if you wanted to join our group
  • I was wondering if you still had time to help us

Do you mind if ....?
Ask permission politely

Do you mind if + subject + present verb

  • Do you mind if I use your pen?
  • Do you mind if we stop here?

Sorry to bother you ...
It can be used to interrupt someone if you want them to pay attention to you
  • Sorry to bother you, but do you know where is the nearest station?
  • Sorry to bother you, but I need your help.

I would like ....
The impolite form of this expression is "want"
Use this with the following structure

                           I would like + noun
I would like + infinitive verb

Instead of ....
e.g. I want a new pair of pants

  • I would like a new pair of pants
  • I would like to have a new pair of pants
