English Imperative




The imperative mood is used to give an order or instructions, to give a warningTo make a request


Affirmative imperative

This is the most common form.There is only second person singular and plural. It is formed by using the infinitive of the verb without the "to"

Examples :

 Hurry up or you'll miss the train !

 Pick up the trash!


Negative form

It requires the addition of the auxiliaries do + not to be added to the infinitive version of the verb without the "to".

Examples :

 Do not walk on the grass !

 Don't be late !

 
Exhortative form

It only applies to the first person plural. It's formed using the prefix Let's + the infinitive form of the verb without "to" 

Examples :

 Let's ask the teacher !

 Let's go and enjoy the summer !


In the negative form , the not is required between the prefix and the verb. 

Examples :

 Let's not go in this club !


When the prefix Let by a personal pronoun other than us, the meaning changes to "allow"

Example : 

 Let me introduce you my new friend


If we speak to a group of people, you can use the following words somebody , everybody, all 
Examples : 

 Everybody sit down and calm down !

 Somebody call a doctor !
