English Superlative

A superlative adjective or adverb expresses the highest degree of a living or lifeless thing.


The greatest hit of the 80s was the Thriller.

  • Superlative adjectives end in  - est
biggest, fattest, smartest...

- The biggest building is in the downtown.
- Who is the richest man in the world?

  • Superlative adjectives end in - iest
If the word ends with ' y ' then we will change to ' i '  and we add ending ' - est' which gets the -iest ending.
happy ➡happi + est = happiest

- I'm the happiest man in the world. 
- The Friends is one of the funniest Tv series

  • Before the adjective is the most
If the adjective has two or three syllables and doesn't ends with ' y '

- The most beautiful girl is my girlfriend.

or the least
- The least popular political party is the CDA.
